Living in O'Neill

Residents of O'Neill are immersed into an improved quality of life that we feel is the key to our thriving community.

Our school systems are outstanding, combining traditional learning of the basics with new age technology. Our streets are protected by an outstanding, professional police force and in fact O'Neill's conviction rate is among the highest in second class cities within the state. A large, well-supported volunteer fire department provides additional public safety as does the competent ambulance/EMT services and quality medical facilities in the community.

HOUSING

  • An outstanding partnership effort between the Central Nebraska Economic Development, Inc.(CNED, Inc.), the City of O’Neill, Avera St. Anthony Hospital, Midwest Ethanol, and Excel Development Group brought 8 new homes to O’Neill in 2008, as well as the plan for 11 more homes.Country Clover Estates is located on north Hwy 281 and Kros Drive. Grant funds received will pay for infrastructure and downpayment assistance costs associated with the project. Phase II plans are to build 11 rent-to-own homes in the same subdivision, with the application for that phase currently in process.
  • Nine new homes were built in 2002. The average cost of homes is $200,000, and monthly rental of a home ranges from $350-550.
  • It is estimated that 90 percent of the single-unit homes in the community are owner-occupied.
  • Income Guide-Line Housing
  • North Park Homes, a 24-unit low-cost housing facility, was completed in 1978 and 12 additional units were completed in 1990. It contains two units for the handicapped, 34 subsidized units, a community room, and two laundry rooms.

Educational Institutions

O'Neill is fortunate enough to have two outsanding schools systems; O'Neill Public Schools and St. Mary's Schools, and a satellite campus of Northeast Community College.

The O'Neill Public School District serves approximately 800 students K-12. It covers 665.1 square miles and has five attendance centers: a K-6 elementary, 7-12 Jr./Sr. High, Alternative Ed, Emmet, and Inman. The district offers a variety of services including Title 1, SPED, HAL, and ELL. High school students may enroll in some classes for both high school and college credit. The implementation of the 1:1 Learning Initiative gives 7-12 students’ access to a Mac Book 24/7 during the school year. About 55% of O'Neill's graduates continue their education at a four year college. Other post secondary schools receive another 30% of the graduates, while the remaining 15% enter the work force or join the military.

St. Mary’s School is a Catholic parochial school in the Omaha Archdiocesan school system which serves as a center for Christian education within St. Patrick’s Parish, the O’Neill community and surrounding area. St. Mary’s has demonstrated over a century of Catholic Tradition, Academic and Athletic Excellence, and has produced hundreds of graduates. St. Patrick Church supports St. Mary’s Schools through endowments, scholarships, and various activities.

Northeast Comminity College has a satellite campus in O'Neill located at 409 East Adams Street at the former O'Neill Elementary Building. Many credit and non-credit classes are offered each semester at the site.
